Dog Handler
Caring for dogs can provide hours of laughter and companionship. Our staff has the unique opportunity to form wonderful bonds with our furry clients and great relationships with their pet parents; however, it is important to understand that this is a demanding position that requires a realistic approach. We are seeking people who are mature enough to understand and accept the responsibility of caring for other people's furry "children".
Job Responsibilities
- Interact with dogs in a group setting, constantly monitoring behavior and body language
- Complete boarding & day program client check-in and check-out
- Engage with dogs in a 1:1 setting, using appropriate tools and toys
- Conduct Placement & Comfort Program evaluations for day programs & boarding
- Participate in ongoing staff training
- Maintain visual observation of dogs at all times and spread attention and play among all dogs in groups
- Report any unusual behavior, eliminations, or injuries to management immediately
- Perform facility maintenance, including washing crates, carriers, and suites, laundry, garbage, dishes, etc.
Minimum Experience, Skills & Expectations
Prior dog handling experience is preferred, along with genuine love and compassion for dogs.
Confidence in working with dogs using tools and techniques taught during training.
Ability to remain mentally alert and on your feet for up to 8 hours a day, in all types of weather.
Ability to push, pull, and lift up to 75 lbs frequently.
Not afraid to get your hands dirty. Cleaning is a major responsibility when caring for dogs. If you get ill at the idea of cleaning up dog poop or throw up, this is not the job for you.
Organizational skills are required. You will need to be able to understand and remember what dog gets what food or medication and what dog belongs to which client.
Not afraid of any breed of dog or allergic to dogs.
Dependability is essential. If an employee does not show up, there is not enough staff to provide a safe environment and properly care for the dogs.
Flexibility is required. Days and hours will change due to the number of dogs in house on certain days. You must be able to work some weekends and holidays.
Customer service is a number one priority, which means always greeting clients with a smile and a spirit willing to help. Clients need to know that each of our staff members cares about them and their dogs consistently.
